Nero Budget — AI-driven financial management and budgeting tool, built by Zeeshan Ashraf

#problem

Nero Budget is an AI-driven financial management and budgeting tool that simplifies money management for individuals. It addresses the friction of manual expense entry by capturing spending through OCR-based receipt scanning, and replaces static dashboards with proactive, conversational insights that help users understand and plan their finances.

#what-i-built

  • I architected the full system end-to-end, from the Nest.js backend and APIs through the Next.js frontend to AWS deployment.
  • I designed and built the Nest.js backend services that handle expense tracking, OCR-based receipt capture, and the budgeting data model.
  • I integrated Yapli to power the AI-driven, conversational financial insights layer on top of the user's expense data.
  • I developed the Next.js web application that delivers the budgeting interface and surfaces automated insights to users.
  • I deployed and operated the application on AWS, owning the cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipeline for the product.

#outcome

Production AI personal finance platform live at nerobudget.ai — full-stack ownership covering the OCR receipt pipeline, conversational budgeting interface, Yapli AI integration, and AWS deployment.

#key-decisions

  • 1.Chose Yapli for conversational AI to surface budgeting insights in natural language rather than static dashboards, making the product more intuitive for non-technical end users.
  • 2.Built receipt capture on an OCR pipeline to eliminate manual expense entry — the primary friction point for retention in consumer finance apps.
  • 3.Separated expense ingestion, categorization, and insight generation into distinct Nest.js service layers, keeping each domain independently testable and replaceable.
  • 4.Deployed on AWS with a serverless-friendly architecture to keep infrastructure costs proportional to usage at early scale.
